Doesn't surprise me in the least that Zipcar is not yet profitable. What does surprise me is that government is not doing more to encourage/subsidize it, as it does for most other transport infrastructure.

I doubt that Velib, France's successful bike sharing project, is profitable either, in spite of its advertising sales. [Perhaps ads are something Zipcar might adopt to improve revenues.]

How many successful public or private transportation services are profitable, I wonder? It appears that France's famed SNCF, at least, is profitable at the moment. guardian.co.uk Europe's rail renaissance on track

Good article, Glenn. Thanks for posting it. If Zip does make it to profitability this decade and comes public I will be surprised and delighted.
