Historically studies have shown the choice for VP has had little or no effect on how people vote for president.

Benwood:

It is a matter of perception at this point. My purely politcal advice to McCain would be to say he is going to have her head up a commission on change in Government. She would be charged with looking into earmarks and other government abuse. This would play up her experience in Alaska and be a perfect election theme.

Your observation, that the VP choice is not the route for change is absolutely true from a traditional view. That is another point I would emphasize. McCain should declare he is not going to go the traditional route. He will reinforce his maverick credentials and assume the mantle of change.

I am not sure he is smart enough to do this. I am not sure he wants to do this. But if he does he wins.

The Republikan VP choice is absurd. The Republicans were never in jeopardy of losing Mississippi and all the Hatfield & McCoy states.

Obama's choice is brilliant. Biden can help take swing states and simultaneously assuage issues over Obama's foreign policy experience. The only other better pick would have been Hillary, but I don't blame the guy for what he did.

Biden is to Obama as Cheney was to Bush II (at the time).
