I started this by making the original post, so I will jump in here for a moment. But only a moment because it doesn't deserve much comment. At least not unless the story that posted as "gossipy" turns out to be true. Whether it is or not, I don't know, and I never presented it as fact. It should be a simple matter to dispel the rumor by looking at pictures of her at the governor's conference. Or talking to the people at the conference--there could not have been any doubt about whether or not she was pregnant there.

First, I took Syb's comment to be disapproving of my post, as well as disapproving of Palin. I dropped it after her post until the question of why she did all that traveling after her water broke came up, and said, well it makes more sense if it was her daughter that was having the baby--then she becomes a concerned mother going to her daughter in a time of need.

As to why it might be important and not simply "scurrilous gossip"--she is being presented as a model of integrity and grit. The story of her carrying this baby to term was repeated several times on the morning gossip, whoops I mean news talk shows this morning. Her "courage," her "walking the walk" of carrying a Downs Syndrome baby to term. It didn't have to be this way--she didn't have to have a news conference announcing her "pregnancy" at 7 months if it wasn't true. She could have been just as gritty if not more so raising her daughter's baby. She chose not to go that route. This is an issue of integrity, IMO, but not in the way that the RW posters have presented it.
