I think you're right. The state has been extremely competent. However, the fleet of buses we thought we'd have for evacuees was not there. The bus contractor was a jackass, couldn't deliver or wanted more cash or something. A huge problem, brought back thoughts of K.-like incompetence. The consequences could have been unimaginable if the East Bank levees break because there is no shelter of last resort such as the Superdome this time around. However, Jindal somehow patched up a fleet of buses bigger than what was actually needed in a very short period of time. I don't think Nagin had a part in this. This was a real triumph.

Obama got on the local emergency radio station, made a pitch for everyone to get out.

I don't know how much of this is making national news so you're getting it from ground zero.

Nagin has been Nagin, however. Already described Gustav as twice the size of K.

My only worry from a personal standpoint is damage to the house. I am also very worried about the West Bank. I think it is a ghost town now as more than 90% of its residents have evacuated. If the surge is not too horrible, East Bank levees may hold. Unfortunately, all we need is one breach for a disaster to take place.

We'll see.

Should be an interesting evening.

Woke up about an hour ago after sleeping very well, interrupted occassionally by the noise of the wind.

Very gusty, but I cannot calculate speeds and know folks tend to calculate higher.

House intact.

Power still on, incredible.

Radio reports suggesting Gustav not as bad as thought.

Will get more interesting later today.
