Obama Begs Palin: Don’t Punish Bristol with a Baby

by Scott Ott for ScrappleFace

(2008-09-01) — As news broke of the pregnancy of Sarah Palin’s eldest daughter, Democrat presidential nominee Barack Obama pleaded with the GOP vice presidential candidate not to be too harsh with her daughter, who plans to marry the father of the child.

“Gov. Palin,” said Sen. Obama addressing himself to her personally, “you tried to teach your daughter about morals and values, but she made a mistake, and she shouldn’t be punished with a baby.”

As a goodwill gesture, Sen. Obama offered to pay for Bristol Palin’s abortion “at any time between now and the scheduled moment of birth.”

or 2-3 months after the birth

Despite the claim of the campaign, I doubt it.

As Josh Marshall points out, the usual way something like this is handled is the campaign approaches a reporter with the story and a prepared statement. Instead, it sort of dribbled out like it was being kept a secret. I gather it was printed in a London paper before they made any statements at all.

If they did any vetting at all, they would have known about the pregnancy. If they have any competent staffers, they would have prepped statements and how to get the information public before the decision was made, just in case.

Which means they did very little, if any, vetting of Palin. And that calls into question the judgment of McCain. Not that I expect there to be any major skeletons in Palin's closet. But the last thing in the world any campaign needs is surprises. Even small ones can distract.
