They can debate why you should take the equivalent of a promising local pilot and assign them to copilot the next space shuttle mission in a few months. Sure the local is bright and probably learns fast, but wouldn't you rather have an experienced Air Force officer with a few thousand hours on bigger craft up there instead?

This has disintegrated into so much rah-rah that debate really is futile. But hey, so is education, so why not?
