Wan't the phase 'under God' added to the pledge in the 1950's?

Yes. And the pledge itself wasn't written until the late 19th century--by a minister who many of the people today would have called, if they had known him, a socialist.

My guess is that many of the people who are called "Founding Fathers" by many people would have been repelled by a pledge of allegiance. Certainly Franklin, Jefferson, Madison and Hamilton would have been. Gouverneur Morris--the person who actually chaired the committee that wrote the draft of the final document--would have been amused. Maybe Adams would have thought it salutary--but with a repellent side.

The woman is fairly ignorant. But I guess that doesn't matter if education doesn't matter.

yup- that's why I thought it was so funny.

Now- and in her defense- she may have been alluding to the final phrase of the Declaration:

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,

Which loosely translates to Under God......

But I wish she had SAID that, wouldn't that have impressed you?
