That's how I interpreted it. It's definitely doable and you're right, the devil is in the details. The US currently imports
Currently we import about 6,000,000 bbl/dy from OPEC and another 760,000/dy from Russia (who I assume we also don't want to continue supporting). That accounts for about 55% of all imports. To replace this in 10 years would require massive upgrading of the electrical transmission grid and massive use of natural gas for transportation fuel. Neither is technically dfficult but would require a lot of political will and capital to push through. It also would likely result in a big increase in carbon emissions through coal for electricity. You couldn't do it and expect the process to be carbon neutral or carbon negative. But doing it is possible.

craig, your first point describes a shell game where nothing actually changes. you explained the shell game in a few sentences, so could have obama. then again, shell game runners rarely elucidate their shell game, now do thay?

obama didn't state it as a goal. if he had, i wouldn't have accused him of lying the way he did. he said,

if you elect me... we will be free from any middle east oil in 10 years.

therein lies the lie. he's promising something that he knows he can't deliver in order to gain an illicit advantage within the minds of the ignorant or gullible.

funny how my 7 year old knew enough to call obama, and i quote, "crazy" for making such an absurd statement.

arnold ran on the same kind of platform - i'm different, "let the sun shine in on the books," etc... the truth is that government is out of control and the unions have incredible power to get theirs. fixing the problem would be political suicide, and none of these politicians will risk personal political suicide to fix the problems.

that leads to obama's next lie - he's doing this for us.

no, he's doing it for himself, which is why he'll keep the lion's share of his ex-presidential tens of millions all for himself.
