So true...Some pre 1960 books will tell us how society was in those years.... Plus, there is another factor of pregnancy before marriage in the "old days" -- As the pioneers were settling this country after the Rev War, oftentimes there was NO preacher around. The traveling preachers followed a circuit and only visited occasionally. Evidently, people made a commitment to themselves, and made the marriage formal when the preacher arrived. (Todays Hollywood and the elite just flaunt it, and many make no attempt to get married.... just look at People Magazine for instance)...
