Plus, there is another factor of pregnancy before marriage in the "old days" -- As the pioneers were settling this country after the Rev War, oftentimes there was NO preacher around. The traveling preachers followed a circuit and only visited occasionally. Evidently, people made a commitment to themselves, and made the marriage formal when the preacher arrived.

Dennis Praeger mentioned on his show yesterday someone who had studied the marriage records of Colonial America, who noted that fully one-third of Colonial marriages were followed by a birth within the first six months of the marriage.
