I think I understand what happened with Palin. After seeing how well the Dem convention was going and that the Clintons were not going to divide the party, McCain panicked. I bet he was going to go with either Romney or Lieberman but by Wed or Thursday, he felt the need to really 'spice' things up and picked Palin even though she was not on the short list. I suspect its why his vetting team didn't get to Alaska until Thursday.
