Michael, keep in mind that every year the Democrats think the election is in the bag for them. Gore should have won because Clinton was still popular coming out of 2000 and a booming economy. Kerry should have won because Bush's approval numbers were dropping precipitously and Iraq wasn't going so smooth.

Now you have Bush with historically low approval ratings and an economy being sold by the mainstream media as "worst since the Great Depression." This election should be in the bag for Obama, but recent polls show a much closer race than expected.

Then McCain takes the initiative and chooses Sarah Palin. Brilliant move from a chess player's perspective, though inherently risky. Meanwhile, the left-wing bloggers worked overtime over the weekend trying to regain the initiative and put McCain's campaign back on the defensive. All this while Obama tries to stay above it all (except you know his campaign aides are giving the bloggers a wink and a nod).

One thing is for sure. If Hillary Clinton had won the nomination and McCain chose Palin, these attacks on Palin would have backfired as "more smears from the Clinton political machine." Now that the Clintons stepped aside, there is no more "Clinton political machine" for the Republicans to blame.

Kerry would have lost to anyone. Terrible candidate and Gore wasnt much better. Obama is though. Thats whats driving them crazy today. They thought they had their edge with Palin and now they dont.

I think you're right.
