I don't think McCain made the choice in panic per se. McCain is a very impulsive guy. He "analyzes" people, situations and issues in 10 seconds, then shoots from the hip. Great if you're a fighter pilot, less useful if you're developing foreign policy or an energy plan. It's why he appears to be so scattershot when viewed through an ideological lens. He's only a maverick in the sense that sometimes the shoot from the hip approach isn't congruent with what his party wants (accidentally usually) but by then it's too late and he's too stubborn to admit he's wrong. Thus the maverick image is created. This decision was no different. He hears about Palin, thinks "hmm, she eats moose, likes guns and knows more than me about energy...HIRED!"

The vetting was a rubber stamp. Now the fun begins for the press......<G>

As you say, impulsivity is not particularly a valuable asset in meeting the challenges ahead. I'll take someone who can think his way through problems, rather than flip over the chess board when he can't find a move he likes at first glance. <NG>
