<i.Hey, I know the opening line there is sort of tongue in cheek, but just off-hand: Is there any country , now or in the past , where you could say "Well, that system they have (or had) sure is better than democracy" ???

Dictatorship is far more efficient and more orderly. If you prize order and direction in your society, then you need only find a dictator who is wise, far-seeing and incorruptable. Then you will be far better than democracy. But it's a tricky step to pull off. Perhaps Lee Kwan Yew of Singapore fits the bill; I can't think of anyone else.

An open question, however, is what is required of a society to be able to support a democracy. If a real civil society doesn't exist, with respect for minority rights, it may be that a limited dictatorship is the best that a society can achieve.

The real danger is when a small group of fanatics seize control of a Democracy and never let go. It happened in Germany in the 30's and it is in danger of happening in Turkey and Pakistan.

I am afraid if Egypt had a free election it would go Islamist and never go back.

It's always better somewhere else for a liberal. I had a guy that travels a lot tell me that Israelis don't want to come here, Germans don't want to move here, French don't want to move here, Brits don't want to move here, Irish don't want to move here, and Italians don't want to move here.

And I said...........of course they don't.........thanks to us, they live in democracies, and then I walked away because I'd had it with the old fool.
