Hearing to remove Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick begins

DETROIT, Mich. (AP) -- An attorney for Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has warned Governor Granholm that removing him would have a chilling effect on officials statewide.

Attorney Sharon McPhail asked Granholm not to remove Kilpatrick this morning during her opening remarks in an extraordinary hearing.

Granholm seeks to determine whether Kilpatrick committed misconduct and should be removed in a scandal over steamy text messages and millions of tax dollars.

McPhail followed William Goodman. The Detroit City Council attorney says Kilpatrick's transgressions have "brought this city to a halt."

Kilpatrick skipped the hearing.

It's just one of three legal minefields for Kilpatrick. He also faces 10 felonies in two criminal cases in Wayne County Circuit Court.
