If we do, we have made iraq a non-issue for the presidential campaign as candidates positions converge.

A ridiculous statement. The two candidates had radically different approaches to Iraq: McCain's was the route that led to our winning; Obama's insured our defeat.

How even YOU can call that a non-issue is beyond me. The difference between the two candidates on Iraq could not be more stark, and it is self-evident that had Obama been calling the shots Saddam would still be in power, we would still be having to maintain overflight into perpetuity, there would be no hope for democracy in Iraq and AQ would be stronger than it is today. There is absolutely no doubt about any one of these outcomes had Obama been in charge.

Had Obama walked into the Oval Office and done what he planned only two years ago, Iraq would have collapsed into total chaos as of now and Iran would now very likely be in control of Iraq's oilfields.

And hopefully shiaa in their new majority position will be better rulers than sunnis were. Its interesting that bidens three state solution which was a fall back position of mine when i thought we were losing seems so stupid now.

It was my position as well, and I am not sure it is that stupid now (or at the beginning). Creating a multi-ethnic federal state is significant challenge anywhere it is tried (Canada, Belgium, Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia). It is a difficult challenge even when the nationalities don't hate each other.

Allowing the country to split would have lowered the hurdle to success.

Success with the bar set as high as it is - Democratic multiethnic country in Arabia (with history filled with nothing but bloody tyrants) would be nothing short of triumph, if it in fact takes place.

Joe

Not stupid at all...to maintain order with force is one thing, to have a functioning multi_ethnic nation is another.
The outcome in iraq won't be really decided until after we leave.
