"My point was that those who now feel energized by Palin used to dismiss those who felt equal excitement for Obama as 'cultists'. That their excitement was somehow mindless and unthinking, and clouded their judgement."

I'm not one of those. I've experienced and observed enough in life to learn that a President... or cops at every doorstep, preachers at every corner, and judges in every living room can force nothing to change.

Change happens first in the hearts of people, when they believe something is crumby they stop doing it, when they trust others they join them in a cause, and when they have hope for something better they work for it. When they believe the system is just, fair, and nobly inclined, they do the right thing because it is right. When their hearts are not in the right place they become dog eat doggish.

A charismatic and principled leader can inspire the hearts of the people, on the back of that faith and trust progams and agencies become effective. A dopey leader can convince children BJ's aren't sex, so they're Aok and that the justice system is something to be tampered with if you are clever enough, or powerful enough.
