Marching band is a great way to convince kids they should never go into the military where life is even more regimented than marching in a block on a football field. It sure worked for me.

I agree. Training in music has priceless benefits. It's the best. I stand in awe of the band directors who take 100+ kids and manage to turn them in to a synchronized musical group that can walk and play at the same time. It's pretty amazing. Kudos to you for doing such an fantastic thing with your life!
