Honestly, I don't think there is time to do both if you also want your kid to excel in academics. Sports, at least at our school, entails so much after school training, you don't have time to do your homework if you also have band- not to mention a lot of the activities are mutually exclusive- you can't play the football games if you are in them- and you are graded in participation in music. They don't let you skip performances because you are in a sport.
