I hope you are correct. Or, if the American electorate isn't quite ready to reject that kind of politics, I hope that the Obama campaign will be able to keep itself above the fray, while still responding to the distortions in a timely way.

I don't know. Americans always seem to be up for a good knife fight - the bloodier the better. Politics as circus. Politicians as gladiators. As Ben Franklin said: "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else."
