The only way that Ukraine can hold itself together is to compete with Moscow for "hearts and minds", but being prepared to consider other forms of "motivation" for those ethnicities that attempt to secede.

They simply cannot permit Moscow to start issuing out Russian passports to Ukrainian citizens in Crimea. Should they accept them, they should be deported to Russia.

It could get nasty, but if we fail to confront Russia over Ukraine, we might as well just sit back while they revive their empire and move into Europe and the Mid-East (gotta get that warm water port.. ;0)

Ukraine is a multinational country

So is Russia.

Ukraine has Russians, including many inclined towards Russia, but it doesn't have regions pulling away or even actual separatist groups. In Georgia Russia portrayed Georgia's attack on the separatist regions as aggressive, because there was a ceasefire, and because there where Russian "peacekeepers" there, combine that with the fact that Russia's attack in to Georgia succeeded so quickly, and you get a much easier situation for Russia to deal with.

Russia could support separatist groups and try to bring about a Georgia like situation, but if its to succeed at all, it will take some time, and even with time it won't be as easy for Russia.
