If ever there were a time when reporters ought to stare straight in the mirror and remind themselves that they do not practice their profession to be intimidated...

I would not put too much faith in the idea that reporters will march boldly into the fray, dig industriously for the facts, and speak the truth as they find it. Investigative reporting in this country is in a sorry state. The great journalistic truth-tellers of the past have been replaced by a bunch of shallow style commentators: photogenic dummies on T.V., and timid mice in the print media. This is a direct consequence of big-money ownership of news media. But even these pale shadows of great reporters of the past might be emboldened occasionally to try to live up to the ideals they learned in journalism school. If they do, and stray too far from the institutional line, their masters will yank the leash, and they will whimper, demure, and tow the line.
