I don't think this will be implemented by the government itself without a major pressure form society.

Correct.

The American experience is that challenges, such as Sputnik, can be met if the national will can be captured and focused.

This has always fallen to a charismatic leader.

The history of the US is remarkable in the fact that in times of extraordinary stress, such a leader has always appeared and the American people have had the good sense to elect those who are able to focus our energy.

From Lincoln to Kennedy, when the chips were down, Americans have selected the person to weather the storm, and we have survived and prospered because of it.

It remains to be seen if that ability to select the visionary leader we need in this crisis will again assert itself or if we are the generation that will once and for all abandon the American experiment in deference to corporatism and personal greed.
