It just shows you how the McCain campaign isn't very flexible. Threatening to sue isn't going to work with the Enquirer. In fact, they will do exactly what they did, use it as free promotion.

So now they are boxed. Having made the threat, they have to do something. Trying to ignore it at this point is just going to fan the flames. Filing suit isn't going to be a whole lot better, but they have a chance to get an injunction on any stories. Which may or may not help.

Regardless, it is yet another issue that can only be a distraction.

My best guess is they will try to expand their narrative about how the mainstream media is out to smear Palin. Not sure how well that can work, the Enquirer is hardly mainstream. And then there is the whole Edwards affair. When sort of paints them as an equal opportunity offender. Now the more paranoid could try to spin it as the Edwards affair was a set up so they could go after their real target, Palin...
