......How can you suggest that they don't have the "holier than thou feelings" when they bring it in to government and want us all to conform? I certainly don't want to force my beliefs on them.

Maybe you personally don't want to force your beliefs on anyone else, but you can't say that about liberals as a group.

Liberals are just as busy trying to get their own beliefs into legislation as is the right wing. That's why it's described as a culture war. Or you could describe it as one group with a belief system based on secular humanism vying for control with another group who has a belief system based on what they think Christian theology is.

Each side wants the other to conform and each side treats the other with almost complete disrespect. Liberals like to think they're inclusive because they more easily embrace diversity and feel responsible to protect the disenfranchised and discriminated against. These things are good and admirable, but in reality, liberals can be rather exclusive too.....particularly when it comes to matters of religious faith.

At any rate, there's been a 50 year cultural war between liberal secular humanist types and conservative faith-based types. So far, liberals have gotten almost everything they wanted it seems to me. The Christian Right has pushed back against this but I don't see their motivation as being holier than thou feelings. I think they just have a different vision for the country's social culture than liberals do.
