My impression is that this is not new. Certainly big money owned the media in the 60s. Or do you have something specific in mind?

Things were different in the past. Media ownership was diffuse, and their was an attitude among the publishers/owners - even if they were rich - that they were charged with a sacred trust - they had a duty as the third branch of government, charged with keeping the other two branches accountable.

Since then there has been a massive shift in ownership to corporate interests - Rupert Murdock and Clear Channel are standout examples. Media reporting is becoming more and more a servant of special interest.
