When you try to minimize the risk of violent islam, you completely lose me. Violent Islam has been the biggest threat to the world for almost 1500 years. And it will continue to be so.

This is one of the more exaggerated statements you've made. With the exception of the past 100 years, Christianity has been just as violent as Islam. And even within that 100 year period, Christians have not always been saints; to whit, N. Ireland, Nigeria, and Serbia. And what you also choose to forget is that the US forced Israel down the throats of the Arabs. Much of Islamic terrorism stems from that one transaction.

As far as ME political balance, I look at it as Maliki vs. Saddam.

Saddam was a secularist... a fighter of the "violent islam" you talk about in the next paragraph. An enemy of Iran, which could be the only real serious threat in the ME.

Malaki on the other hand is very much a friend of Iran. He at the least tolerates the Shiite factions... and when we are out of the way will exclude and/or persecute the Sunnis. And most of our ME allies are Sunni. Lot's of moving parts and admittedly difficult to simplify.

When you try to minimize the risk of violent islam, you completely lose me. Violent Islam has been the biggest threat to the world for almost 1500 years. And it will continue to be so.

Totally wrong. It's hard to argue against something so totally fictional.
