Its a fairly common expression.

"I'd love to be a fly on the wall" basically means, I'd love to be able to see and hear that conversation/situation/whatever without them knowing I was there.

Tim, there is something about you that is hard not to like. Now smile.....that was a compliment. <g>

I know what fly on the wall means. I didn't understand what it meant in the context it was used.
