Palin is the one who came out and mocked anyone who thinks she isn't tough enough to take it; hiding in a shell of handlers wouldn't exactly bear that out, would it?

Personally I think the McCain as maverick reformer thing is very contrived. He is a long-term Beltway fixture, surrounded by lobbyists as advisers, and if he comes to power, he will have no ability to get anything done legislatively. Even his court appointments will be a major fight and a major compromise.

If he had any hope of going to the White House with a Republican congressional majority on his coattails, then maybe. But this is just campaign spin in the current context.
