I would not characterize solar as being "less reliable" (as you did in your post), in that the odds of the sun not coming up tomorrow over suitably chosen 'solar generation terrain' such as the Mohave Desert is pretty damn low. <GGG>

Sure the sun will come up, but will it have peak intensity, day after day, every day, including in the winter? And does it shine at night?

Nighttime alone gives you 50% downtime. Additional downtime (other than from equipment failure which can happen with other methods as well) might be low in the Mohave, but it exists, and is more common elsewhere (if you don't want to transmit all our electricity from the Mohave). And reduced production without downtime will happen even in the Mohave.

Which doesn't mean BTW that I in any way oppose solar or wind power. I would not campaign against the ideas, or try to put laws or regulatory barriers in their way.
