Stalin's crimes where much worse than Gadaffi's and FDR met with him multiple times (not just sending his secratary of state). Sure the justification was bigger, but I do understand the point behind having some contact with Gaddafi. If you don't allow those who renounce terrorism, and generally act better, back in to the community of respectable nations, than you shift the incentives towards no renoucement of terrorism.

OTOH I also understand your disgust. "Realpolitic" may be necessary at times, but it can also be very distasteful.

As for bin Laden, well not only was 9/11 much bigger, but it was far from his only crime. Several others where on a similar scale to Lockerbie/Flight 103.

Also there is the simple fact that he isn't a head of state. terrorists/pirates/common criminals and such don't get the same type of diplomacy and real politic that heads of state get.

What's your opinion of earlier American meetings with Arafat (a sort of quasi head of state)?
