Many moderates previously thought John McCain would make a fine, moderate president. When he embraced Bush and morphed into McBush, he lost a lot of that support.

Too bad. He could have saved his maverick reputation with a pick of, say, Lieberman. But he has fallen into the same trap as Bush - selling his soul to the radical wing of his party.
