I see no way to reconcile these views - except to leave it up to each woman and her God.

Good Point.

Sorry for a longish post. I'd been resisting the temptation to get into this debate, mostly because I assumed it's been discussed exhaustively - but figured it's OK to chime in when I saw some veteran posters here debating it<g>

I think the fallacy here is looking at a legal issue through a subjective prism. Anti-abortion laws are unconstitutional because they apply only to half the population - one can't really get past this hurdle.

All the other arguments from both sides are true and hence the angst - Life of course begins at conception and abortion is a procedure that ends a human life. And Syb makes the great point that the best option is to not get into the situation of needing one. This is quite easy in this day and age and why I consider the Alaskan Governor and her family a poor example.

A good analogy to this conflict, I think, is end of life issues in Medicine. The law really doesn't see a difference between Withholding life support as opposed to Withdrawing life support that's already established. The two are morally and legally equivalent but many nurses and physicians (me included) feel a bit queasy when we take somebody off life support as opposed to skipping the ICU altogether and going straight to comfort care.

I realize that this conflicts with the life at conception, a soul in every fertilized egg view, and I see no way to reconcile these views- except to leave it up to each woman and her God.

Life begins a conception, don't you think? Whether it be dog, cat or human?

As to the soul in a fertilized egg, years ago I read the most interesting thing about Islamic theology. Supposedly somewhere in the Koran is the concept that God sends a soul into an embryo on the 42nd day. 42 days is roughly 6 weeks, the dividing line for what is considered a miscarriage. Many Christian groups speculate that a miscarried fetus has not been endowed with a soul.

At any rate, I was intrigued by this teaching of Islam.
