These people are taking the "life is sacred" idea to its logical extreme, and very extreme it is. Talk about your slippery slopes. This paper does a good job pointing out what would happen if a fertilized egg is considered a person, but lost me when they said "The fundamental biological differences between a fertilized egg, embryo, or fetus versus an infant show that a woman has every right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy—for any reason." Uh, no - if it were as simple at that we would not have "Born Alive" issues, for example.

* Given existing criminal statues, Amendment 48 would subject women and their doctors to life in prison or the death penalty for abortions, even in cases of rape, incest, and fetal deformity

It won't pass constitutional muster.

I'll be voting against it.

the kind of thing that puts me at war with Social Conservatives.

Was just discussing this elsewhere:

Long ago I arranged an abortion for a friend's daughter, taxied her to the abortionist big and brought her back small. The enormity of what I'd been accomplice to was like a punch to the solar plexus. That friend's daughter went on to build a happy and successful life for her and her subsequent issue.

It seems to me that abortion shouldn't be a matter for politics and politicians. Instead it's best left to the social pressures each side can exert. Ain't gonna happen.
