It doesn't seem all that strange to me, judging a person’s character based upon his actions rather than just his words. On reflection you are probably correct about why Obama didn't following through and donate anything. (Check his charitable donations in his tax returns) Probably after seeing the abject poverty and dire need of the people living in the village of his father, he made the same political calculation that you made, that is mike backfire and become a political liability, so it’s better for him to just to do nothing.
