"Silencing the opposition" obviously doesn't mean putting duct tape over one's mouth.

It just means excluding them from the mainstream discussion. They can shout all they want, but they will forever be branded a "racist jerk" and thus ignored.

Taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one's station; presumptuous: "was getting a little uppity and needed to be slapped down" New York Times.

It was used in regards to women for a long time.
