Yes, I worded that sentence incorrectly. The chance of getting pregnant relying on condoms is 1/7 that of using no protection. I don't think there's anything wrong with my site which quoted 12%. I can believe that some other study has come up with 6%. Whatever, the use of condoms doesn't provide ironclad protection against pregnancy or STD transmission. Also, it seems that most of the 6% comes from not using a condom every time or using a condom incorrectly. About 2-3% of the time, condoms break. The rest of the time condoms fail its because of improper use. I don't think the improper use is usually a matter of ignorance, but rather lack of care. At the time people are using condoms, they're kind of preoccupied. Mistakes are understandable and being realistic, unavoidable every time. Which is why it's a darned good idea for sex ed classes to teach people how to use them correctly. Like I said, people don't use them improperly because of ignorance. This ain't rocket science. BTW sex ed (of any kind) is pretty ineffective. I posted something on that too. If it encourages people to have more confidance in condoms that is warranted, it could actually be counter-productive.
