To all who have countered me on this issue, Syb, Rambi, and Lane, let me say again that I'm conflicted as to overturning Roe because of the criminalization that would follow. I think abortion IS the killing of another human being BUT also am not eager to see women forced to bear a child.

I think this discussion started when several on the thread expressed surprise that Palin didn't abort her Down syndrome child, which BTW was discovered thru a blood test (no amnio was done), and I jumped in to her defense, so to speak.

What also is behind all this though is that I believe there is much truth to some of the criticism the right has about Democrats. I think it's unfortunate and makes it hard for the party to take the WH. The right charges that Democrats are cavalier about abortion and the decay of morality in the culture. They point to pornography, the entertainment industry, the push to legalize drugs, lack of discipline and clothing standards in the schools, etc. But let's don't go on about freedom of the press issues or medical marijuana, please, because I purposely used the word CAVALIER...as in a cavalier attitude.

They're concerned with trying to keep their children unharmed by abortion, drug addictions, STDs, pornography, and schools that spend so much time trying to control undisciplined children that their own children are somewhat neglected. What they see on TV are liberals presenting scholarly, reasoned, and, yes, elitist arguments why 'freedom of choice' should always be the overriding issue. Rightly or wrongly, the conclusion is drawn that Democrats are very cavalier about these dangers, maybe even like these behaviors.

And I understand this. I keep wondering why the Democratic party can't compromise on some of these issues instead of what looks like a knee-jerk resistance to anything that might circumscribe someone else's freedoms. For example, why did the party try to stop the outlawing of partial-birth abortions?
Or why does the party want to block parental notification? In my state, a minor can't even have his or her wisdom teeth removed without a parent's permission and signature.

Even though I've been voting straight D for awhile now and will in this election, I think some of the criticisms of Democrats are valid. In my own personal experience, I think, generally speaking, liberals as a group are quite antagonistic to religion and belittling of people of faith. Are elitist and put way to much value on advanced degrees and particularly ivy league educations. And come across as indifferent to the cultural influences that make parenting more difficult than it should be.

I wish the party, if it really wants to win, would try to find one or two really simple cultural issues and get out in front on them. Right now, a group of I think 100 or more college presidents have banded together to argue that the drinking age should be reverted back to 18. This would be a perfect issue for Dems to take the lead on by resisting this change. Or they could agree that parents should indeed be notified before their minor child undergoes the medical procedure of abortion just as they would be if that child is about to undergo any medical procedure.
