You have to be pretty darn shrewd to last this long in politics. Some people are born politicians, and clearly enjoy it. Brown, Bill Clinton and Sarah Palin are some examples. I don't think Obama is one of them, for all the skill of his campaign that knocked out Clinton.

Willie Lewis Brown, Jr. (born March 20, 1934) served over 30 years in the California State Assembly, 15 years as its Speaker, and afterwards as the only African-American mayor of San Francisco. Under current California term limit law, no Speaker of the California State Assembly will ever have a longer tenure than Brown's record 15 years.

Is Willie Brown turning into San Francisco's version of Jimmy Breslin? That's the first column I've read of his. It has a real man on the street, ear to the ground feel to it. Looking at his archives, it looks like he was the first to float the rumor that Powell would endorse Obama at the Democrat convention. Remember when Bill Kristol caused quite a stir when he said that? I think he got it from Brown.

I like those little digressions and asides.

Although I have to say the whole Slow Food Nation movement is something of a puzzle.

A guy came up and asked me - does it mean you cook it slow or eat it slow?
