Obama and McCain to appear at Ground Zero

Posted Sunday, September 7 2008 at 19:26

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana, Sunday - US presidential nominees John McCain and Barack Obama will appear together on September 11 in New York at the site where the World Trade Centre collapsed after being hit by hijacked planes in 2001.

“All of us came together on 9/11 – not as Democrats or Republicans – but as Americans. In smoke-filled corridors and on the steps of the Capitol; at blood banks and at vigils – we were united as one American family,” the two senators said in a joint statement issued on Saturday.

“On Thursday, we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity, to honor the memory of each and every American who died, and to grieve with the families and friends who lost loved ones.”

Appear together

The event will mark the first time McCain, the Republican nominee, and Obama, the Democratic one, will appear together since they were nominated to run in the November 4 presidential election.

The two have rarely appeared together during the campaign. The two briefly were on the same stage at Saddleback Church in California last month but the moment lasted just long enough for a few pictures to be taken.

The two men will join on Thursday in an anniversary commemoration at Ground Zero, the site where the World Trade towers once stood.

Nearly 3,000 people died on September 11 in hijacked airplanes that were crashed into the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and in an Pennsylvania field.

Meanwhile, for the second time this year, mechanical problems have forced Mr Obama to change charter airplanes on short notice.

The public announcement system on Obama’s leased 757 jet malfunctioned Saturday, when the plane landed without incident in Terre Haute, Ind., for a campaign event. Campaign aides said federal rules require planes carrying passengers to have working PA systems.

So when Obama and his entourage of staffers, Secret Service and press left Terre Haute for Chicago, they had to switch to a smaller, 50-seat ERJ plane operated by ExpressJet.

Meanwhile, the rock group Heart, angry that its ‘70s hit “Barracuda” is being used as the unofficial theme song for Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, is taking aim at the Alaska governor.

Heart singers Ann and Nancy Wilson said a “cease-and-desist” letter has been sent to the Republicans asking them not to use the song. “The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission,” according to a statement issued on behalf of the sisters. The McCain campaign said it had obtained the appropriate licenses. (Reuters)
