Starting with the economic -

Even if we didn't use a drop of oil to fuel cars, we would use oil and natural gas for other reasons. The Middle East is the big source, and mostly the low cost source. As US oil production declines we would still likely find middle east oil very useful.

Also our trading partners import oil, disrupting the supply would disrupt their economy and thus ours.

Beyond the economic reasons there are concerns about Israel, about terrorism, about unstable and/or hostile regimes seeking nukes, bio weapons and such.
