Judging only from the information we have (oil price history up to today), it was quite rational to pump that oil.

Was is rational 5 years ago? Is it rational now?

oil was cheaper

The MBA calculations don't take into account anything but the money. It's a real problem for the U.S. now that the major oil fields are drained. There is a great deal of national interest that is lost for the profits of a few.
