Well, we have had several elections where the right has recognized no lower limit on how far they are willing to go.

And it works. Look at what happened to McCain in 2000. He ran a clean campaign, Bush didn't. Look who won. Rove was able to erase McCain's lead in several states with exactly the tactics you decry.

Personally, I wish those tactics didn't work or would backfire. But, the reality is they don't.

McCain has hired some of the very same people who honed these tactics for Bush. Only a moron would expect that things won't get worse from McCain.
