The discussion was narrowly about drilling or not drilling.

If we don't drill our own oil, we give more money to Iran. (at least indirectly, we haven't bought much oil from Iran, but buying oil from other sources, lets Iran sell its oil at a higher price).

Use is a separate question, you can drill more and still use less, or you can use more and drill less. The only way extra drilling in the US is going to effect use much is if it has a large effect on the price, and if it does lower the price, then even better in terms of your point because a lower price means less revenue for Iran.
