Most people's start in religion comes from their parents. Little Moslems grow in to big Moslems, and little Christians grow in to big ones. The emotional experience you speak of is simply (I think) the firing of the God spot within our brains- you can get it to fire in the laboratory. I've had the same emotional feeling of a connection to the universe- though I didn't associate it with a God. Interestingly, I had those feelings most as a teen, so I figure they are hormonally triggered.
