I guess one could say that it's an evolutionary process in itself as some ideas get thrown out and new perceptions are added in in the attempt to reach a rational and cohesive personal testimony. I agree completely that it's an evolutionary process as is almost everything else. I think there is a significant risk of mutation as well, especially if one version is held to be superior to others or if the fervent believers rationalize too much. You are spot on about the need for a cohesive personal testimony which, I believe, is the main reason religion holds its sway - it's able to deliver what science cannot.
