South Ossetia is part of Georgia, they where trying to reestablish control over it. We did that ourselves with break away regions. See the Civil War.

In any case Russia was preparing an invasion of Georgia, and there is some indication that Georgia attacked South Ossetia to try to preempt it. From the Georgian perspective at the time - If the attack is successful they could have established positions that would have made the invasion of Georgia somewhat more difficult, if it fails then they are no worse off then if the passively waited for the Russian hammer to land our their head.
