It was never the role of the federal government to be messing around in education and I think it would be better if they never did. That should be something left to the States and it is an issue that conservatives have generally rallied around - (there has been heated discussions about that here in the past).

Smaller government is still argued for by conservatives even though they no longer walk the walk. Still though, there is I believe a huge number of people who want smaller government - meaning less fed involvement in education. Pork projects as sins is a great example as it relates to bigger government.

Education - and education unions are seen as a bastian of liberal leaners. So whereas eduction may not be a special interest group in the normal sense, I think some still see it that way. Myself included.
