I think in talking with Smithee on IM I've hit upon the empty ones problem. I just couldn't figure out how this guy can be so tone deaf and his campaign is starting to become that train wreck that you can't stand to watch but you can't seem to turn away from either. I think the problem is neither he nor his staff have run or been involved in a national campaign. He just can't get his mind around the fact that he can't be sneering at the gun toting bible thumpers to thunderous applause while in San Francisco without the gun toting bible thumpers hearing about it in under 3 hours. He thinks he is orating and entertaining the group that is in front of him and doesn't realize all the rest of us are hearing him also. He just can't seem to get his mind around the fact that his every utterance is going out to the entire nation via the press and he isn't just pandering to the group that is in front of him at that moment. At least that is my present theory.
