The glass ceiling. i worked for a large corporation and from 70's forward women were welcome as supervisors, managers and a lot of effort went into developing and finding high potential women.

I did a lot of college recruiting during the 80's and hired hundreds of high potential students from a number of colleges. the women usually were far superior in qualifications, motivation to learn and advancement vs the men.

Usually after a couple of years of junior management they hit a brick a wall. they fell in love, no longer wanted to relocate , or make commitments in the area to the hours required to get to the next step. They put up the glass ceiling not management. A few continued to track through the organization but not very many. I believe in the late 80's we started job sharing to help retain highly qualified women who no longer wanted to commit to daily work challenges etc. this worked for a few, others wanted to be full time mothers and planned to later come back into the work force. Other women who didn't have children but married or found a significant other relocated with them and unless we could find a job in the area of her new relocation they left the company.

It seems no one ever mentions all the programs that were developed to move women through the organization.

Women can come back into the work place after their children are in school etc.. However, they lost a few years and in the meantime a new crop of new hires have established themselves , demonstrated qualifications to handle difficult situations and are usually current on business activities.. A person coming back into the work place will take time to get up to speed and again prove she is competitive to earn future promotions.

We all have choices perhaps more women need for the significant other to stay home.
